5 Running GSS
There are two ways to start GS Server; the preferred method is to allow other applications to start GS Server as they connect using the ASCOM interface. Each application that supports ASCOM will have their way to configure and connect. Here is the ASCOM interface from SkyChart (CDC)
Use the Select button to select the ASCOM.GS.Sky.Telescope driver.
If this is the first time connecting to GSServer you will need to configure it before the applications will allow connections. See the configuration section. Once configured, click the connect button. If the configuration is correct GS Server will start within a few seconds. It’s possible the connection may fail. If so, GSServer will start but will not be connected to the mount. Reconfigure the driver and try connecting again.
The second method is to start GSServer.exe file located in the program directory. If starting for the first time configure the driver before hitting the connect button. Refer to the configuration section.
Hibernation and Sleep
WARNING – You must fully test hibernation, sleep and resume before using this feature for unattended or remote operations. You should verify that the telescope position is correct on resume and that it moves correctly.
GS Server support for hibernation and sleep is dependent upon your computer hardware and Windows drivers, specifically for graphics and serial ports which must function without error on resume.
Before entering the hibernate or sleep state you must ensure that:
- the telescope mount is stationary
- tracking is off
- no go to, slewing, pulse guiding, axis movement or hand controller actions are in progress and no client ASCOM applications issue these commands
It is recommended that you maintain power to the telescope mount so that GS Server recognizes the correct position on resume. SkyWatcher telescope mounts do not maintain internal positions when power cycled.
If you use the AutoHome function to re-establish the telescope mount position you must be able to observe the mount motion and stop the mount to prevent pier collisions or equipment damage.
If GS Server cannot safely and successfully resume it will close and you should review the monitor log to find out why resume failed.
